OUR PROJECTS

Whist

The Lions Club commenced running Whist Drives in September 2018.  This is a popular card game played by 4 people in a slightly similar way to Bridge.  However, with Whist there is no need to go along with a partner as you play with a different partner for each game.  A full Whist Drive takes approximately 2 hours to play and consists of 20 games broken down into four quarters.  We have an interval after 10 games when refreshments are served.  All players take account of their score as play progress and there are money prizes at the end of the night for Top Score, Top Lady, Top Gent, Half Time and Quarter scores etc., as well as a raffle.

We generally make a small profit on the night but the biggest win for the Lions Club is in providing a warm and comfortable environment and a friendly atmosphere for all the players.  Our members run the night, and provide and serve the refreshments.  It has proved to be very popular with both locals and players who travel from surrounding towns and villages.

We would like to thank Scoil Bhríde for allowing us the use of their premises for the games which take place on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 8.30pm.

If you are interested in playing and need further information please contact Siobhán at 087 6166324, or any Lions Club member.

Sheltered Housing

One of the most significant projects to be undertaken and completed by Kilcullen Lions was the sheltered housing in St Brigids Grove in the town. Dave Prendergast, Colm Murray and Jim Kiely were instrumental in the completion of the four homes which were opened by Minister for Finance Charlie McCreevy on June 11, 2001. Planned in conjunction with KCC and Health Board, the houses, comprising kitchen, sitting room, bathroom & bedroom, are suitable for 1 or 2 people. The rent is kept low and the housing is provided on a lease basis to four local residents of Kilcullen. Ongoing support is provided to residents through building maintenance and visits.

Outdoor Gym

An outdoor Gym was launched by International Rugby star Jenny Murphy in July 2018 and has been a great Assett to the Community with good numbers using the equipment. The Outdoor Gym will be located on the long narrow strip of grass opposite the Complex and will consist of 12 different fitness machines catering for all ages and levels of fitness including two wheel chair friendly machines.

KARE Centre

A  KARE centre was enabled to be completed in the Cross and Passion College grounds due to great fundraising work by the Lions in 2004 through a Golf Classic which resulted in a €100,000 donation.

Sli na Slainte Walking Route

The Sli na Slainte walk was designed around the environs of Kilcullen with the help of the Lions Club in the late 1990's. About 3kms long, it takes in the picturesque Dunlavin road and the rural McGarrys lane and Nicholastown before returning to Kilcullen via the Athy road.

Adapted vehicle

We provided a specially adapted vehicle for 2 young men suffering from Friedrichs Ataxia.

Their mother was finding it more difficult to transport them – Lions Club funded a special vehicle, which made life easier and enhanced the life of the young men. A Fashion Show was organised to raise funds for this venture.

Defibrilator

The idea, funds and support for a public defibrilator for the town were provided by Lions Club. It is situated at the Credit Union in case of a medical emergency.
